Realizing a dream

28 February 2001 | A group of San Francisco third-graders got chance to see what a college campus looks like, hear about life as a Berkeley student and meet Oski during a Feb. 20 campus visit.

The students — primarily from low-income families where English is the second language — hail from the Mission District’s Marshall Elementary School. The two third-grade classes have been adopted by the “I Have A Dream Foundation,” a local group that helps underprivileged children acquire the skills needed to obtain a college education.

The foundation will mentor the students through high school, providing economic, academic and emotional support for their transition to college.

While at Berkeley, the students took a campus tour, including stops at the Campanile and Lawrence Hall of Science. At Haas Pavilion, Cal basketball players encouraged them to do well in school so their dreams of going to college could came true.

The visit was arranged by the Office of Community Relations.
