William Turnbull, Jr.: Buildings in the Landscape

William Turnbull Jr. was a frequent visiting critic in the College of Environmental Design’s architecture and landscape architecture programs, where a William Turnbull Jr. Memorial Fund now supports studies of the relationship between buildings and landscape.

This large-size volume, which includes 300 images and illustrations, documents Turnbull’s best-known structures, from the Sea Ranch Condominium I to his own house in Napa Valley.

Contributors include Donlyn Lyndon, the Eva Li Professor of Architecture; CED alumni Dan Gregory, Lauri Puchall and William Stout; Turnbull’s widow, Mary Griffin, who has lectured in CED classes; and Dung Ngo and Mitchell Schwarzer.

Turnbull’s buildings, Lyndon writes, “are conceived in their site. As they grew in his mind and emerged from his hand, they were stroked and disciplined by the acts of construction, tutored in the accommodation of human action, and set against insistent measures of excellence.”
