Robert Williamson
Robert Brady Williamson, professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been awarded the Arthur B. Guise Medal from the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. Williamson, who will receive the award next month, is recognized for his contributions to engineering for fire safety and protection engineering.

Arpad Horvath
Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Arpad Horvath, along with five other university researchers, will receive an AT&T Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowship. The fellowship includes a $25,000 grant to support the project “Hybrid Life-cycle Assessment of Telework and Teleconferencing.” Horvath and his research team will develop techniques to measure the environmental impacts of telecommuting and teleconferencing.

Alaa Mansour
The Technical University of Denmark has named Professor of Mechanical Engineering Alaa Mansour to receive its highest honor, the honorary doctorate (“doctor technices honoris causa”). He will receive the award at the end of this month in Copenhagen.

Three chemists honored
Three Berkeley faculty members were honored by the American Chemical Society at its recent meeting in San Diego.
Chemical Engineering Professor Alexis Bell received the ACS Award for Creative Research in Homogeneous or Heterogeneous Catalysis, sponsored by Shell Oil Foundation. Bell will present an address before the society’s division of colloid and surface chemistry.

The ACS Award in Pure Chemistry, sponsored by Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity, was presented to Carolyn Bertozzi, associate professor of chemistry. She will present an address to the division of organic chemistry.

The 10 winners of the society’s Arthur C. Cope Scholar Awards, sponsored by the Arthur C. Cope Fund, included Professor of Chemistry Jean Fréchet. The winners will address the division of organic chemistry at the 22nd ACS national meeting in Chicago in August.

Andrew Scharlach
Professor Andrew Scharlach of the School of Social Welfare has been selected by the Australian Fulbright Commission to receive a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award.

Scharlach plans to investigate how recent Australian long-term care policies affect elderly people and their families. He will also offer a lecture series addressing the financing and provision of aging services.
