Register for ASUC Art Studio classes
Registration is in progress for fall classes at the ASUC Art Studio. To sign up for classes in photography, ceramics, drawing, painting, video, digital imaging and other media, see www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~asucarts/ or register in person. The studio is located on the lower level of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union Building.

ezSurePay statements now available online
Faculty and staff may now view their surepay earnings statements in a secure, online environment using the new ezSurePay service from BAS/Business Services Payroll. See bas.berkeley.edu/ezPayroll/ezSurePay to view ezSurePay information online.

ezSurePay can be used to print out copies of surepay statements for tax purposes, to obtain a loan, or to replace a misplaced copy.

To obtain one’s CalNet ID and passphrase — which serve to protect personal information — see calnet.berkeley.edu or speak with your departmental CalNet deputy.

Sept. 9 is LHS Grandparents’ Day
All grandparents accompanied by a child will get free admission to Lawrence Hall of Science on Sunday, Sept. 9. Grandparents will also receive a $5 discount on a new LHS membership, and a 10 percent discount on any item purchased for their grandchild at the Discovery Corner Museum Store.

A program on collecting science-oriented toys and objects will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Grandparents’ Day is also the last day to see the LHS exhibit “Science in Toyland.”

Library enhances services for visitors
The University Library is now providing enhanced services and library privileges for visiting scholars. The new privileges include: graduate-student level borrowing privileges, one-semester borrowing at most libraries (extended from two weeks), remote access to databases, full-text e-resources, free inter-library loan, and access to fee-based Baker accounts.

To obtain these services, visiting scholars should register with the Visiting Scholar and Postdoc Program and obtain a registration card.

Free Rockridge BART shuttle continues
The free AC Transit shuttle from the Rockridge BART station to the campus has been extended through Dec. 31.

“Cal Access” — a pilot program sponsored by the campus, the city of Berkeley and AC Transit — offers free rides on the 7, 51 and 64 bus lines to staff and faculty who present their employee identification.

Buses run every 15 minutes or less from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays. Riders can board or exit at any point along the line.

Feedback sought for long-range plan
The campus’s Strategic Planning Committee has issued a call for ideas on potential new long-term initiatives for the campus. Comprised of faculty, deans, vice provosts, students and senior staff, the committee would like to consider research and instructional initiatives — either within a single discipline or bringing together several areas of inquiry. Ideas received will help shape the academic vision that guides future resource decisions. Statements may include some actions for the near term, but should focus on the 2004-2005 period and beyond.

Campus puts a hold on student dances
The campus has declared a moratorium on fall semester student dances at Pauley Ballroom in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union, while a fast-track task force looks for ways to ensure that such events are successful and safe.

“Our goal is to get improvements made and fine tune operations so that dances can resume as quickly as possible. Still, we know the moratorium will be disappointing to student groups that planned to have dances this fall at Pauley,” said Karen Kenney, dean of students.

The task force will look at ways to improve the operation of the facility and address physical limitations of the building. It will be chaired by Assistant Chancellor John Cummins and will include representatives from student groups and the ASUC.

The goals are to provide better, safer access into and out of Pauley Ballroom, as well as more effective crowd control outside. Outside lighting lighting and security staffing needs will also be reviewed.

Correction
The target date for launching the campus’s new Web-based Human Resources Management System is currently under review. The system will not be launched in January 2002, as reported in the Berkeleyan’s story about the e-Berkeley initiative (Aug. 23).
