Help SF Bay shorebirds; pick up trash Sept. 15
Shoreline trash kills birds and other animals that call our local shorelines home. You can help, from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 15, when the California Coastal Commission, the city of Berkeley and local sponsors hold their annual East Bay shoreline cleanup.

The event is part of an international effort to clean up beaches, bays and waterways. Last year, more than 1,030 people collected 30 tons of garbage in Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville.

The staging area for Berkeley participants is behind the Seabreeze Market, at the corner of West Frontage Road and University Avenue at the Berkeley Marina. Arrive promptly to sign up, get a free cup of coffee, and hear a safety talk. Bring gloves, sunscreen and a hat. Clean-up bags and a raffle of donated prizes will follow the clean-up.

To help beautify the Emeryville shoreline, meet at the firehouse on Powell Street. For Albany, go to Albany Beach at the foot of Buchanan Street. For information, call 644-8623.

This event is designed to enlighten undeclared students to the wealth of academic opportunities available at Berkeley.
