Terrorist attacks may mean late mail
U.S. Mail and package delivery through such companies as FedEx and UPS may be delayed in the coming week because of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

Campus mail services officials say departments should expect delays because the FAA grounded all airlines in response to the attacks. The grounding of the nation’s air fleet cut off a major vehicle for mail delivery across the continental United States. Officials say the delays will affect over night and two-day deliveries.

Questions can be directed to Mail Services at 643-MAIL.

Gathering explores women’s health care
An interdisciplinary dialogue on women’s health takes place Saturday, Sept. 22 at Boalt Hall, sponsored by The Berkeley Women’s Law Journal.

The day-long symposium focuses on barriers women face — especially those from poor or under-served communities — when trying to access health care, and the current legal, political and grassroot strategies that address these inequities.

Featured speakers include Assemblywoman Dion Aroner, Sylvia Law, co-director of the Hays Civil Liberties Memorial Program and Elizabeth Dollard, law professor at New York University. Visit www.law.berkeley.edu/students/BWLJ.shtml or call 642-6263 to register.

Night safety shuttle service expanded
To improve service for early morning shuttle riders, the campus has replaced its nighttime shuttle route with a door-to-door service operating every morning between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.

During those hours, call 642-9255 for door-to-door shuttle service from any campus location or Night Safety Shuttle stop to your residence within the following campus area boundaries: North - Hopkins/Yolo/Eunice; West - Sacramento Street; South - Ashby Avenue; East - Hillside/Prospect (including all campus housing facilities)

A vehicle will be dispatched by the UC Police Department to your location as quickly as possible. Riders no longer need to be at a Night Safety Shuttle stop for pickup. Service will only be provided from campus or a Shuttle Stop to the rider’s home.

For information, call 642-9375 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Overseas positions for faculty available
Faculty are invited to take a position as an Education Abroad study center director.

Education Abroad directors help assure harmonious relations with UC’s partner universities; serve as instructor of record for students in the program; identify learning opportunities at partner institutions; and provide analysis of international educational systems and institutions.

The program currently has 17 openings, in the following locations: Egypt, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, Russia, Scandinavia (Denmark/ Sweden), Spain, UK/London and Vietnam.

All tenured faculty members of the Academic Senate, including lecturers with security of employment and emeriti faculty, may apply. Fluency in the language of the host country and a broad knowledge of the host country are major qualifications; length of appointment varies from one-semester to two-year appointments, depending on the program.

The deadline to apply is Monday, Oct. 8. See www.uoeap.ucsb.edu/Faculty/default.htm for information. E-mail Suzanne King at academicaffairs@uoeap.ucsb.edu for an application.

Nominations sought for Dan David Prize
The campus has been invited to submit nominations for a new international prize offered by Tel Aviv University and the Dan David Foundation.

A $1 million Dan David Prize is awarded annually to each of three people “with proven, exceptional, distinct excellence in the sciences, arts and humanities, who have made an outstanding contribution.” This year’s prize is designated for individuals in the fields of history, the life sciences, and information and contemporary society.

The deadline for submission is Oct. 15. E-mail rprice@socrates.berkeley.edu with the names of potential nominees or redbeard@uclink4.berkeley.edu for information.

Policy outlines rules for renaming facilities
In a new policy on the naming of facilities, the Board of Regents has delegated approval of named facilities to President Atkinson, who in turn has delegated most such approvals to campus chancellors.

At Berkeley, proposals to name facilities such as rooms, open spaces, roads and buildings are reviewed first by the Space Assignments and Capital Improvements Committee and its Naming of Buildings Subcommittee, which forward their recommendations to the chancellor. This process also applies to such permanent campus fixtures as plaques and benches in public places.

For information, see www.chance.berkeley.edu/smcp/ or contact the office of Assistant Vice Chancellor Tom Koster at 642-1781.
