Free screenings for depression Oct. 11
The campus will offer free, confidential screenings for depression, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, in Stephens Lounge, Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union.

The screenings will include a written self-test followed by an interview with a counselor. Referrals for follow-up evaluation and treatment will be provided.

Symptoms of depression can include persistent feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness, difficulty concentrating, constant fatigue, unexplained aches and pains, or thoughts of death and suicide. Depression is also a factor in many suicides: about two thirds of those who complete suicide have depressive disorders.

Those who may be experiencing symptoms related to the Sept. 11 attacks are also invited to participate.

For information, call 643-7754 (faculty and staff) or 642-9494 (students).

Dates set for Tang’s first flu shot clinics
University Health Services’ first flu shot clinic of the season is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The first clinic will be open to the campus only, and is limited to high-risk individuals. This includes those who have chronic health conditions, are in the second or third trimester of pregnancy during flu season, are 65 or older, are health care workers or take care of high-risk individuals, or are receiving long-term aspirin therapy. All others should wait for later clinics.

Beginning with the clinic scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23, all adult members of the campus and community are welcome. More clinics will be scheduled in October and November as the vaccine arrives.

All clinics are on a drop-in, “while supplies last” basis; they will be held at the Tang Center, Class of ‘42 Room, from noon to 6 pm. The cost is $15.

For information on the flu vaccine and risk factors, see the: Centers for Disease Control web site.

For information on the Tang Center clinics, call 642-1814.
