Human Resources offers mentoring workshop
A workshop on becoming an effective mentor takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 1, in 24 University Hall. The class is sponsored by the Office of Human Resources’s Employee Development and Training program.

Tips on mentoring — including the role of the mentor, benefits and challenges of mentoring and effective mentoring practices — will be provided by Dean of Students Karen Kenney, Steve Lustig, assistant vice chancellor for University Health Services, and Russell Kaltschmidt, manager of the Staff Internship Program.

Alumni class gifts exceed $1.2 million
Berkeley alumni raised more than $1.2 million during class reunions held during September’s Homecoming & Parents Weekend.

Members from nine classes gave money for scholarships, the Library, and other programs, including the Chancellor’s Millennium Fund, the California Alumni Association’s Leadership Scholarships Endowment, and the Library Collections Endowment.

Several classes set aside a generous portion of their gifts for the Library.

The Class of 1956 raised $56,949 for the Library’s preservation endowment, making it the first class in the nation to raise money specifically for the preservation and restoration of rare books and materials. The class has been donating to the preservation department since its 40th reunion. It plans to continue with the ultimate goal of donating $1 million by its 50th anniversary in 2006.

The Class of 1951, celebrating its 50th reunion, raised the largest sum from among the classes —$369,975.

New engineering digest goes online
The College of Engineering is launching a monthly online research digest, Lab Notes, to highlight promising research at the college.

The digest — available at coe.berkeley.edu/labnotes — features articles on a range of subjects, from the science behind nanoscale coatings for bone prosthetics to how Berkeley engineers are tackling the energy crisis with tiny “smart dust” sensors that detect and can help regulate environmental conditions within buildings.

Additionally, each month Lab Notes will spotlight one great moment of innovation from the annals of engineering history at Berkeley.
