Blue, gold and green

A huge percentage of the energy consumed worldwide — some say half — goes for constructing and operating buildings. What can we, as a campus, do to help? Students and other members of the campus community will offer solutions from 2 to 3 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Berkeley Blue in Green Art and Design Contest. The competition, sponsored by Campus Recycling and Refuse Services and UC Berkeley Art Museum, aims to generate new ideas for a “green” building on campus. Students, faculty and staff will display their creations on Upper Sproul Plaza. A panel of judges and the members of the audience will vote on the winning submissions, which may include models, collages, sculptures, drawings and prose. Prize categories include the most creative and unique design, most technically feasible, and most extensive use of “green” features such as energy conservation and use of replenishable and recycled materials. The environmental design contest is being held in conjunction with the “Ten Shades of Green: Good Buildings, and Good For You,” an exhibit on “green” architecture currently at Berkeley Art Museum through Dec. 2. Prize-winning designs will be displayed in the museum’s Theater Gallery for a week following the contest. For information on the competition, e-mail CalSREC@yahoo.com or call 643-4612.
