Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli
Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli has been named the 2001 recipient of the Electronics Design Automation Consortium’s prestigious Phil Kaufman Award. The Kaufman Award honors individuals “who have made a substantial sustainable contribution to the success and advancement of the electronic design industry.”

Sangiovanni-Vincentelli’s involvement with the design industry dates to the mid-1970s. He is a world-renowned authority on circuit simulation, computer-aided design of integrated circuits, logic synthesis and system design. As a member of the National Academy of Engineering, he holds the highest professional honor for an American engineer.

Campus has 11 new AAAS members
This fall, the council of the American Association for the Advancement of Science elected 288 new Fellows, 11 of whom are at Berkeley. Each will receive a certificate and a rosette pin in blue and gold (the colors are entirely coincidental) as a symbol of their distinguished accomplishments. Berkeley’s new members are as follows: Michael Botchan and Russell Jones, biological sciences; Carolyn Bertozzi, Charles Harris, Alexander Pines and Richard Saykally, chemistry; Alan Schoenfeld, education; David Stoddart, geology and geophysics; Elwyn Berle-kamp and Alan Jay Smith, information, computing, and communication; and Mu-Ming Poo, neuroscience.

Chevron Award for Career Center
The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has announced the selection of the Berkeley Career Center and its director, Thomas Devlin, as recipients of the NACE/Chevron Award for Innovative Programs in Career Services. The Career Center team includes Terre Beynart, Robert Eisman, Susan Hedgpeth and Kathy MacClelland.

Devlin’s offices have been recognized an unprecedented three times — twice during his tenure at Cornell, and now as he leads the Berkeley Career Center.

The NACE/Chevron Award recognizes the development of a groundbreaking program in the field of career services. Berkeley won for its Web-based employer profiles site, which gives students access to a variety of employers and helps employers showcase their job opportunities to students seeking employment.

Edward Penhoet
Edward Penhoet, dean of the School of Public Health and professor of health policy and administration and molecular and cell biology, is among the 60 new members of the Institute of Medicine.

Active members elect new members from among candidates chosen for their major contributions to health and medicine or to related fields such as social and behavioral sciences, law, administration and economics.
