Welcome letter from the Chancellor

It is my great pleasure and honor to welcome our newest faculty members to the Berkeley campus. This year, an exceptional group of scholars and teachers has joined us, and we are tremendously fortunate to have them.

Berkeley is known worldwide for its cutting edge scholarship and teaching, its first rate student body, and its bold discussion of the issues of the day. Central to all these strengths is our preeminent faculty.

Whether measured by awards, research, scientific breakthroughs, or service to society, our faculty are leaders in their fields and in the classroom. That is why we continually seek to recruit both the most promising young scholars and senior faculty of international acclaim.

This year we have been particularly successful in achieving our goal. For academic year 2001-02, 73 percent of the faculty members we recruited accepted offers. One third of these new recruits are women and two are Howard Hughes Investigators. One will serve as the director of the Institute of East Asian Studies and the other as director of the Regional Oral History Office.

All our new faculty were heavily courted by other top universities, and all will further enhance our academic excellence across many disciplines.

I have met and spent some time with many of these new faculty members. I am impressed not only by their accomplishments, but also by their commitment to the mission of this university. I am certain that all of them will make important contributions to our campus community and beyond, and that they will continue to provide the absolutely best education possible to this university's students.
