Work on new Stanley Hall gets underway
Pedestrian traffic, parking, deliveries to be affected by construction

The demolition of Stanley Hall and construction of a state-of-the-art replacement facility is set to begin. The new building will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research and teaching involving the biological sciences, physical sciences, and engineering. It will be located on the same site — on Gayley Road just uphill from Hearst Mining Circle and adjacent to the campus’s East Gate — but will be significantly larger than its predecessor. The new incarnation will have three floors underground and eight floors above, and a grand plaza and entrance off Mining Circle.

Demolition is scheduled to begin in late March, with excavation following in May; construction of the new facility will get underway this fall and be competed in spring 2006.

Emergency and disabled access in the area will be maintained at all times during the project, as will vehicular traffic along Gayley Road. The campus shuttle-bus service will continue to use the same stops and routes, including access to Hearst Mining Circle via University Drive. However, pedestrian traffic, parking, and deliveries on the northeast quadrant of the campus will be affected while work is in progress.

For pedestrians, the sidewalk on the west (downhill) side of Gayley Road, from Donner Lab to the East Gate, adjacent to the construction site, will be closed starting Monday, Feb. 24. Signs will direct pedestrians to the east side of Gayley; the crossing to central campus will be in front of Hearst Greek Theatre. At times of heavy construction traffic, flagmen will be on duty to assist pedestrians and drivers.

All occupants of Stanley Hall have been moved to other campus locations, and the parking lot in front of the building closed permanently on Feb. 3. To make up for lost parking at Stanley Hall and at the Goldman School of Public Policy, the top level of the Lower Hearst Parking Structure, just below Euclid Avenue, is being converted from recreational space. More than 100 new parking slots will be available there in late 2003.

Capital Projects is in contact with affected departments concerning delivery access to buildings in the vicinity: Donner Lab, the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, and Cory and Davis Halls.
