‘Writers at Work’: Linda Williams
Film critic Linda Williams, professor of rhetoric and film studies, will present a “Writers at Work” lecture at noon on Tuesday, March 4, in Morrison Library, located in Doe Library.
Williams will read from her works, be interviewed about her writing process, and answer questions from the audience. Her criticism covers a range of genres, including melodrama, pornography, horror, and documentary. Williams’ latest book is “Playing the Race Card: Melodramas of Black and White, From Uncle Tom to O.J. Simpson.” For information, call 642-5570.
Humboldt Foundation grants enable study in Germany
A variety of fellowship programs are sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, a nonprofit foundation established by the German government to promote international research cooperation. They enable scientists and scholars under 40 years of age and not resident in Germany to spend extended periods of time there, conducting research of their own design. A decision by the UC Board of Regents to out-source a significant portion of UC’s investment portfolios to private fund managers has generated interest from UC staff and faculty. Free HIV testing at Tang discontinued
As a result of the state budget crisis and its impact on the State Office of AIDS and the City of Berkeley HIV/AIDS Program, the city will no longer offer free, anonymous HIV antibody testing at the Tang Center. Members of the campus community are encouraged to use alternative sites. Financial aid for I-House residents
Upper-division and graduate students who will have already completed one academic year at Berkeley may qualify for financial assistance to help pay for room and board at International House. International students, U.S. residents, and permanent residents may apply for either the 2003-04 academic year or the fall 2003 semester. The application deadline is March 7; for further information, see ihouse.berkeley.edu.
Proposals sought for teaching-technology grants
University of California Teaching, Learning and technology Center (TLtC) provides systemwide visibility to campus and faculty efforts that use new technologies to improve teaching and learning. UC faculty are invited to apply for TLtC expansion and implementation grants (up to $75,000 per year for a maximum of three years) for intercampus collaborations benefitting the entire UC system. At LHS, science, math educator takes reins
Elizabeth Stage — an educator and leader with a national and international reputation in teacher development, student assessment, and educational equity — is the new director of Lawrence Hall of Science, as of Feb. 10.
Prior to coming to LHS, Stage directed the Mathematics Professional Development Institutes at UC Office of the President, and worked at LHS for much of the 1980s in mathematics and computer education. She holds a doctorate in education from Harvard.
“I’ve spent 30 years of my professional life working on one goal — to increase opportunities for all students to learn worthwhile mathematics and science,” said Stage. “Lawrence Hall of Science played an important role in providing me with the background and skills that I have developed to promote educational equity.”
Staff success stories sought for sharing
Campus units are invited to submit thir best practices for “Maximizing Employee Input in Management Decision-Making,” this year’s theme for the Workplace Success Stories Recognition Program. Pro-cedures, practices, events, or organizational changes that support an inclusive campus community and improve organizational effectiveness will be shared with the campus.

Digital Library launches website
A public version of the California Digital Library website went online in January. The site provides a single point of access to hundreds of digital collections and exhibits produced or managed by the UC libraries, museums, academic departments, and research units.
