New campus website focuses on Iraq issues
A new website devoted to the Berkeley campus’s response to the Iraq crisis has been developed and launched by Public Affairs. Described as “a clearinghouse for information about the campus’s efforts and policies to promote dialogue and learning in a climate of civility and tolerance,” the site includes links to a variety of web-based resources, including a schedule of forthcoming lectures and debates, as well as archived webcasts of recent campus events. Current and developing campus policies and procedures are also found on the site, newscenter.berkeley.edu/iraq/.
Gospel concert to benefit black students
The Black Staff and Faculty Organization is hosting a gospel musical to benefit African-American scholars at Berkeley. The concert, featuring local gospel choirs and performers, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, March 9 at the Greater St. Paul Baptist Church, in Oakland.
Donations will be accepted to benefit the George Scotlan Scholarship Fund, which recognizes undergraduate African American students who have demonstrated academic excellence. The church is located at 1827 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, near 18th Street in downtown Oakland. For information, call 643-7690.
Cal goes to SoCal
The “Discover Cal in Southern California” program is holding a series of spring lectures in southern California, delivered by Berkeley faculty, as part of its effort to raise awareness of the campus among the area’s 90,000-plus alumni and parents of current students.
The next event, on May 1 — highlighting distinguished teachers and undergraduate education — will take place at Fox Studios in Los Angeles. Speakers will include Chancellor Berdahl, Professor of Rhetoric Marianne Constable, and Steve Welter, professor of environmental science, policy, and management. The final lecture, on June 12 in San Diego, will focus on pioneering discoveries in health research.
A Feb. 26 lecture in Burbank featured Professors Michael Nacht and Arthur Reingold speaking separately on issues of national security and bioterrorism.
Koh to give March 13 Jefferson Lecture
Harold Hongju Koh, professor of international law at Yale University, will deliver this year’s Jefferson Memorial Lecture on “Transnational Legal Process After Sept. 11” at 4:10 p.m., Thursday, March 13 in the Lipman Room of Barrows Hall.
From 1998 to 2001, Koh served under Secretary of State Madeline Albright and advised her on U.S. policy on democracy, human rights, labor, the rule of law, and religious freedom. He has also presented testimony to Congress on these topics.
The Jefferson Lecture was established in 1944 for the study and promotion of the basic principles of American democracy.
In memoriam: Philip Brett concert March 9
A memorial concert for Philip Brett, former chair of the music department, will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 9, in Hertz Hall. The program will feature choral and instrumental works by William Byrd, Benjamin Britten, and Henry Purcell. A reception will follow.

Management award nominations sought
Berkeley Staff Assembly is seeking nominations for this year’s Excellence in Manage-ment Award. With the theme “Keeping it Light in the Workplace,” this year’s award will recognize supervisors and managers who, even in times of increased workloads and diminished resources, “bring light to their units.”

Parking & Transportation now at new location
The campus Parking & Transportation office has a new home, 2150 Kittredge Street (near Oxford Street, just west of campus). The move combines six units formerly housed at three separate locations. Customers may purchase parking permits, bicycle licenses, and transit tickets; pay or appeal citations; and obtain parking and alternate- transportation information. Seven new customer-service windows will allow for faster service.

Strawberry Canyon Rec Area reopens
Repairs to the Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area are in the final stages. The Fit Center opened this week; hours there are noon to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. The West pool will open by March 17 at the latest; the East pool will remain closed until further notice.
The project included complete renovation of the men’s and women’s locker rooms, converting restrooms on the west side of the building to unisex facilities, replacing the roof, and adding seismic upgrades.
