Campus to hold vigil, faculty panel on Iraq war
A special advisory committee on Iraq has been preparing for several weeks to help campus leaders prepare for the potential repercussions of war with Iraq. Two events will take place immediately after spring break, when students have returned to campus.
At 8 p.m., Monday, March 31, there will be a vigil on Sproul Plaza sponsored by the University Religious Council and the ASUC. The event will include speakers and music. Participants are asked to bring flashlights instead of candles, for safety reasons.
On Tuesday, April 1, the Institute of International Studies, International and Area Studies, and the Office of the Chancellor present a faculty panel on the economic, political, and regional implications of the war in Iraq. The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Zellerbach Hall. Admission is free and open to the public; a two-ticket limit is in effect. Tickets will be available at the Zellerbach box office on March 31 and April 1.
Homeland-security web resources
A UC systemwide web page on homeland-security, campus emergency preparations, and related topics has been created at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/homelandsecurity/.
Safety of students abroad is top of mind
The university’s Education Abroad Program (EAP) is taking steps to provide for the safety of UC students abroad. Students are receiving updates about safety precautions; students, staff, and faculty have 24-hour access to emergency contacts, if needed; crisis and contingency plans at all EAP locations have been updated; and communications to the EAP community are being prepared in anticipation of war. Currently, all EAP programs in operation for 2002-03 remain open. For information, contact the campus EAP office at 2-1356, or email eapucb@uclink4.berkeley.edu
MSAP application deadline nears
Applications for the Management Skills Assessment Program (MSAP) are being accepted now through Friday, March 28. This UC-wide program helps new or less-experienced managers develop their leadership skills during an intensive, five-day workshop at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove.
Program participants are selected on a competitive basis, with highest priority given to those with between one and five years of supervising experience. There is an $800 recharge fee for the workshop. For an application or information, contact Jarralynne Agee at jagee@uclink.berkeley.edu or 642-2711.
Forums focus on work to restructure job classifications
The Staff Infrastructure Steering Committee (SISC) and the Office of Human Resources are sponsoring three information sessions for staff in April. SISC representatives will discuss their progress toward restructuring the campus’s job-classification system.
The 90-minute forums are scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, at 9:30 a.m. and Monday, April 14, at 10 a.m., both in the Bechtel Engineering Center’s Sibley Auditorium, and Wednesday, April 16, at 7:15 a.m. in 150 University Hall.
In addition to job classifications, SISC aims to overhaul campus compensation, performance evaluation, and career development programs. Visit sisc.berkeley.edu for information.
