NewsCenter wins CASE award
The campus’s new online NewsCenter has won a Circle of Excellence award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) as one of the top ten university websites of 2003. The NewsCenter, which debuted at newscenter.berkeley.edu on Feb. 10, received a silver medal in the competition, which drew entries from 153 university and college websites in the United States and Canada. Of the 13 medals awarded — 3 gold, 6 silver, and 4 bronze — the NewsCenter was the only news site honored. Judges praised the site’s balance and its incorporation of special modules to cover a variety of interests in a way that “can serve numerous constituencies well.”

David Freedman
Professor of Statistics David Freedman has been named winner of the 2003 John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science — a medal and a prize of $25,000 awarded annually for noteworthy and distinguished accomplishment in science. The National Academy of Sciences named Freedman “for his profound contributions to the theory and practice of statistics, including rigorous foundations for Bayesian influence and trenchant analysis of census adjustment.”

The award was established by the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. in honor of John J. Carty and has been awarded since 1932.

Martin Jay
Martin Jay, the Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of History, has been awarded the Wissenschaftspreis by the Hamburg-based Aby Warburg Foundation, recognizing his work in art, culture, and intellectual history. The foundation supports scholarly exchanges with the city of Hamburg, bringing international scholars to the city for public lectures and research. Jay’s work focuses on European intellectual history, visual culture, and critical theory. He joined the Berkeley faculty in 1971. He will visit Hamburg in late June to accept the prize.
