A new outdoor park at the Lawrence Hall of Science, opening on June 21, explores how San Francisco Bay was created and the changes that continue to affect its structure. Park visitors can investigate geologic forces (right), ride earthquake simulators, set erosion in motion, and scope out 180-degree views of the bay using powerful telescopes. The centerpiece of the park is a waterfall that represents water flowing from the Sierra Nevada to the bay. A grand-opening ceremony will take place at the museum on Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22, featuring performances by the Allen Temple Baptist Choir, the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Band, and Son de la Tierra. Participants can also get close to native critters at BayLab, make and fly kites, or take part in Native American games and crafts.
