Quick HR answers online
To help managers and supervisors stay on top of rapidly changing business practices on campus, the Office of Human Resources has created a “time-sensitive” website that includes up-to-date information on recently implemented policies and programs (hrweb.berkeley.edu/manage/timesensitive.htm).

The site provides answers to basic questions managers and supervisors may have, such as what is changing, what are the impacts, what do I need to do, and where can I get more information?

Currently posted on the site are details on academic case tracking, consolidated billing, the eRecruit system, the Staff and Academic Reduction in Time (START) program, and vacation-leave accrual reporting. More information will be added as new programs are launched.

Cal Rec Club expands free group-class offerings
Full members in the Cal Rec Club are now eligible to attend any of the Recreational Sports Facility’s group exercise classes at no expense. In the past, members could attend Cal Aerobics classes for free only during the morning.

Offerings include close to 70 classes in aerobics, studio cycling, yoga, Tai Chi, water exercise, kickboxing, step aerobics, and more. A new noontime “20/20/10” workout, offered weekdays except Wednesday, includes 20 minutes of cardio exercise, 20 of strength training, and 10 of stretching and flexibility work.

Group exercise classes are offered from 6:45 or 7 a.m. through 7:30 p.m. weekdays, with a more limited class schedule on the weekends. The schedule is available online at calbears.berkeley.edu/calaerobics. For recorded schedule updates, call 642-6400 and press 2.

Changes to Berkeley/Davis shuttle
The schedule and bus sizes for the UC Davis/UC Berkeley Intercampus Shuttle have changed, due in part to budget reductions and in part to more than 350 responses to a recent user questionnaire. Departures from Berkeley to Davis (Monday to Friday only) are as follows: 11:30 a.m., arriving UCD 1 p.m.; 6:30 p.m., arriving UCD 8 p.m. Return trips from Davis are as follows: 7:30 a.m., arriving UCB 9 a.m.; 2:15 p.m., arriving UCB 3:45 p.m.

Reservations are suggested for tickets on these 41-passenger buses. For further information (including pickup/dropoff locations), visit berkbus.ucdavis.edu or call (530) 752-8287.

English teachers’ group opens West Coast office on campus
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), based in Urbana, Ill., has opened a regional office in the Graduate School of Education.

Dale Allender, the council’s associate executive director for secondary education, will direct the new office and teach a course at the school beginning in the spring semester 2004. Several faculty members at the school — the birthplace and home of the National Writing Project — have strong ties to the council, said P. David Pearson, the school’s dean.

The NCTE West office will work to integrate council materials, programs, and speakers in state and local professional-development programs, guide policies influencing the teaching of English-language arts, and contribute to research collaboration among institutions in the Bay Area and on the West Coast.

UC is ‘engine for economic growth’ in California
“California’s Future: It Starts Here” is an independent report on the breadth and depth of the university’s contribution to California’s economic growth, health, and community resources. Among its findings are that UC’s impact on the state economy exceeded $14 billion last year; that the system was responsible for 2 percent of all employment in the state (nearly 370,000 jobs); and that its more than 100 libraries make it the largest educational library system in the world.

The full report, as well as an extended summary of its findings, are online at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/itstartshere.
