It’s TAPS for campus temp-employment program
As a result of declining revenue and budget reductions, the Office of Human Resources has decided to close the Temporary Assistance Program (TAP), effective Dec. 31. As a result, OHR is moving to a new model for supporting departmental needs for temporary staff, primrarily through greater use of limited appointments.

Effective Sept. 15, OHR will no longer be accepting requisitions or work orders for new temporary assignments. Employment Services will maintain support for current TAP assignments until Dec. 31; the few current assignments that are scheduled to extend beyond Dec. 31 will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

As the current TAP assignments end, Employment Services will work with departments to consider alternatives for meeting their temporary staffing needs. Details about new processes will be published by mid-September.

Early-music fest on hold at Cal Performances
Cal Performances has announced that it will suspend production of the 2004 Berkeley Festival & Exhibition, due to budget constraints and a decline in contributions. In its stead, a conference, exhibition, and fringe festival of concerts will be mounted in Berkeley by a group of early-music organizations.

“I hope that an improved fiscal environment and new sources of funding in 2006 will allow us to resume the role of producing the festival,” said Cal Performances Director (and Berkeley Festival founder) Robert Cole.

Early Music America, the national service organization for the field of early music, will hold a conference and exhibition in Berkeley June 10-12, 2004, at locations to be announced. A fringe festival of concerts will take place concurrently. As details are made final, information will be available at www.sfems.org/fringe2004.htm, the website of the San Francisco Early Music Society.

Berkeley’s Much Ado airs on UCTV
In 1996, Shakespeare scholar and Professor of English Hugh Richmond (now a professor emeritus) took 20 undergraduate students to Southwark, London, where — on the stage of the newly rebuilt Globe Theatre — they reprised a performance of Much Ado About Nothing that had been staged several months earlier on the steps of Wheeler Hall.

The full performance was captured by Educational Technology Services (then called Media Services) and will be broadcast later this week on UCTV, the University of California cable and dish programming. To learn when the program will air and which station in your viewing area hosts UCTV, visit www.uctv.tv/where.shtml.

For the record…
In our last edition, we said that today’s memorial service for the late Stafford Q. Johnson would take place on Faculty Glade. The correct location for the 4 p.m. service is Memorial Glade, in front of Doe Library.

Also in that edition, we said that University of Michigan Professor Dawn Tilbury is organizing a research colloquim for next Wednesday’s 25th-anniversary celebration of Women in Computer Science and Engineering. In fact, the colloquium is being organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences.
