In adapting Foe, J.M. Coetzee’s 1986 takeoff on Robinson Crusoe, for the stage, Assistant Professor of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies Peter Glazer took some liberties of his own: Friday (center) is now a mute young African man; Crusoe shows no interest in converting Friday to Christianity: and a female character, castaway Susan Barton, is portrayed by three different actresses. Foe will be presented at Zellerbach Playhouse Oct. 3-19.
