This year’s Homecoming & Parents Weekend was the biggest celebration of its kind ever held at Berkeley, thanks to the added participation of students, who developed the first slate of “student homecoming” activities in decades. With their additions, the celebration was extended from its traditional three-day weekend to a full week.
More than 5,000 alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, and sightseers jammed the campus and environs to enjoy a spectacular range of enjoyable things. There were processions (including the largest class procession ever), receptions, rallies, reunions, competitions, open houses and seminars — even a football game. (Cal lost to Oregon State, as it happens, though the festive mood on campus was bright enough after the preceding week’s triple-overtime victory over USC to keep spirits high.)
Speaking of which, the spirit of giving was alive and well all week long. Fentons Creamery kicked off the celebration by giving away 4,000 scoops of ice cream. A Cal Can Competition (see photo, page 1) collected some 1,845 pounds of food for the Alameda County Food Bank. And alumni from the numerous class reunions presented more than $300,000 in gifts to a grateful campus.
