LBNL hosts event on science funding
On Monday, Oct. 27, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab will host a workshop on current and new models for funding science and engineering research. The workshop is being offered by 15 federal agencies and departments that have banded together to address the changing nature of scientific research, examine the effects of these changes on how research is done, and advise the National Science and Technology Committee.
The workshop will be held in Building 50 at the lab. Registration is $25 in person on the day of the event, or register online at www.lbl.gov/ rbmworkshop.
UC names retired admiral as VP for labs
The Board of Regents on Oct. 20 appointed retired Admiral S. Robert Foley as vice president for laboratory management. A longtime naval commander and consultant on energy and defense issues, Foley will lead UC’s management of the three national labs it administers on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy — Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, and Los Alamos labs.
Foley served in the U.S. Navy for 35 years. In 1985, he was appointed assistant secretary of energy for defense programs by then-President Reagan. Later he held high-level positions in the private sector, as consultant to the Departments of Defense and Energy and as a member of President George W. Bush’s energy transition team.
His appointment is effective Nov. 1; his annual salary will be $350,900.
For more on his appointment, see ucop.edu/news/archives/2003/oct20art1.htm.
Volunteers sought to assist service-based student breaks
Cal Corps Public Service Center is recruiting faculty and staff to serve as break advisers for the Alternative Breaks program, which takes students on community-service-based trips in California during winter and spring recess. Break advisers participate in the weeklong breaks, doing service alongside the students and providing support for student break leaders as needed.
Winter breaks are scheduled for Jan. 5-10, 2004, and spring breaks for March 22-27. For information, contact Alexis Bucknam at alexisb@uclink.berkeley.edu or 643-0305.
For the record...
In the Oct. 9 issue of the Berkeleyan, in an item listing new fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, we erroneously described Donald Glaser, professor in the graduate school in molecular and cell biology and physics, as a Pulitzer Prize-winning physicist. He is a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. There is no Pulitzer Prize in physics.
In the Oct. 16 issue, we misspelled the middle name of law-school donor Elizabeth Boalt. The correct spelling is Josselyn.
