As winner of this year’s Dorothea Lange Fellowship, journalism lecturer Mimi Chakarova has been documenting the lives of clients at Oakland’s Creative Growth Center, a nonprofit visual-arts center for adults with severe developmental disabilities. This image is of Luis Aguilera, a client whose romantic relationships “often distracted him from making art and kept him preoccupied with his girlfriends’ jealous outbursts, tears, and kisses,” according to Chakarova. This and other photos from the project are now on display in Moffitt Library near the elevator bank on the main floor.
Entries for the 2004 fellowship — which is sponsored by the Office of Public Affairs and includes a $4,000 award — are being accepted through Dec. 1. Berkeley
faculty, graduate students, and seniors accepted for graduate work at Berkeley are eligible to apply. For details, see www.berkeley.edu/lange.
