UCTV has programs of campus interest to view in November

05 November 2003

Keeping up with the rich, varied influx of speakers and events on the Berkeley campus can often feel overwhelming. The solution? Catch up on what you missed on UCTV, the University of California’s own television channel.

The Graduate School of Journalism recently brought New York Times columnist, best-selling author, and Princeton University economist Paul Krugman to the campus. Krugman’s talk, “The War in Iraq and the American Economy,” will air at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12. This program can also be viewed on demand on the UCTV website at www.uctv.tv/library-test.asp?showID-8192.

Berkeley’s School of Public Health and the Center for Infectious Disease Preparedness recently hosted “9/11, A Look Back and a Look Ahead: Factors Associated with the Evacuation of the World Trade Center,” in which Robyn Gershon of Columbia University examines the crisis-management strategies employed during evacuation of the Twin Towers. The program airs at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17.
UCTV broadcasts on the Dish Network, channel 9412, and on local cable channels (see www.uctv.tv/cable/ for listings).

In addition to cable and satellite broadcasts, UCTV offers a “video on demand” online archive. Recently, “State of Minds,” a 30-minute UC news-magazine program hosted by veteran journalist (and Berkeley assistant vice chancellor for public affairs) George Strait, debuted on the station. The premiere included segments on new UC President Richard Dynes, the UC Natural Reserve System, Berkeley paleontologist Tim White, UCLA’s impressive replacement hospital (designed by architect I.M. Pei and his son, Didi), and the popularity of the Bay Area’s City CarShare program. To view the show, visit www.uctv.tv/library-test.asp?showID=8138.
Other recently archived shows from Berkeley include “Lunch Poems: Cornelius Eady,” in which the poet reads a series of poems inspired by jazz greats (www.uctv.tv/library-test.asp?showID=7952). Also available is the September segment of Chancellor Berdahl’s webcast program Bear in Mind, in which Berdahl interviews College of Letters and Science Executive Dean Ralph Hexter on the importance of a liberal-arts degree, psychology’s Professor Martin Covington on the joy of learning, and graduate student Kristin Reed on the oil industry’s effect in Angola (www.uctv.tv/library-test.asp?showID=8212).
