2003 Faculty Research Fund for the Biological Sciences
Five faculty members received awards in 2003 from the Faculty Research Fund for the Biological Sciences. This is the seventh year of the fund, created by a $5-million gift from anonymous donors. Its purpose is to maintain and enhance the quality of biological research on the campus by providing short-term support for underfunded feasibility studies and equipment needs. The chancellor allocates funds upon advice from a committee of faculty involved in bioscience research.

The 2003 recipients, their departmental affiliations, and projects are:

Carolyn Bertozzi and Michael Marletta, chemistry, seed funding for chemical-biology graduate program;

Steven Brenner, plant and microbial biology, computational biology enabling proposal;

Dan Portnoy, molecular and cell biology and School of Public Health, seed funding for the Center in Microbial Biology and Infectious Disease;

Karsten Weis, molecular and cell biology, molecular-imaging center funding.
