Not your ordinary high-school field trip

20 November 2003

Fifty-two freshmen from Sacramento’s John F. Kennedy High School visited Berkeley last Saturday, enjoying a campus tour, a noon rally with the band, and a football victory at Memorial Stadium. It was one of four annual field trips made by participants in Kennedy High’s Program in American and California Explorations (PACE), developed by former California state senator Gary Hart (seen here to the right of the Oski figure held aloft by a participant). The honors program entails four years of accelerated courses, cultural events, community service, college-preparatory sessions, and field trips. Under Hart’s direction, more than 200 students have participated in PACE over the past two years.

The campus tour was followed by a session with a panel of Berkeley students who filled the PACErs in on college life, study abroad, sports and athletics, and coursework.
