Retirement calls to a Public Affairs stalwart

In unison — as they’ve approached much of their work as partners in coordinating the annual Cal Day — Diana Musto (left) and Julie Layne raise a cheer for the Cal Band, which made a surprise appearance at Layne’s retirement party at Alumni House on Jan. 9. Layne, who has worked with Musto in Public Affairs for the last 14 years — first planning special events and campus visits for dignitaries, then overseeing the Cal Parents program, the Visitor Center, and Cal Day — took the baton and led the band with gusto, to applause from well-wishers. The duo works with departments all across campus in planning the program, logistics, set-up, and marketing for Cal Day, which attracts upward of 35,000 visitors to campus each year. For Layne, full-fledged retirement will have to wait, however: She will be pressed into service part-time to continue helping units plan for Cal Day 2004, set for Saturday, April 17.
