De Valois memorial set for Feb. 9
A memorial service for psychology professor Russell De Valois will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, in the Great Hall of the Faculty Club. De Valois died Sept. 20 from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was a distinguished vision researcher, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and the recipient of numerous scientific awards and honors.
Applications sought for I-House room and board
International House is offering room-and-board financial assistance for international students, U.S. citizens, and permanent residents for academic year 2004-05 and fall semester 2004. Those eligible are graduate or upper-division students who will have completed one academic year at Berkeley and can demonstrate financial need.
Applications are available in the foyer of I-House’s Human Resources and Residence offices and online at ias.berkeley.edu/ihouse. The application deadline is Feb. 27.
Hertz Hall retrofit now in progress
Work began this week on Hertz Hall, which will benefit from seismic renovation, accessibility upgrades, and maintenance that had been deferred. The project will affect the patio and small lawn on the south side of Hertz, as well as part of the breezeway between Hertz and Morrison Halls. Access to Morrison Hall will not be interrupted, although the path under the breezeway will be narrowed for the duration of construction.
Hours of construction will be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2004. To discuss health or environmental concerns, contact Environment, Health & Safety at 642-3073. Information on performances regularly scheduled in Hertz Hall can be found at music.berkeley.edu or in 104 Morrison Hall.
UCOP’s website on Prop. 55 education bond
A website developed by UC Office of the President provides voters with information on Proposition 55, the education-bond on the March 2 statewide ballot. This measure would provide $12.3 billion to build, repair, and modernize higher education facilities and K-12 schools. The site — at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/prop55 — features a fact sheet, Q&A, and a UC projects list, as well as links to the Secretary of State and other proposition-related sites.
Staff Ombuds Office report available
The campus Staff Ombuds Office has published a report on its activities for 2000-02.
The summary includes a demographic profile of campus employees who used its services and the types of concerns they raised. It also offers recommendations, based on its work with staff, regarding selection and training of supervisors, workload, civility and fairness, and collaboration and risk-taking in the campus environment.

Training offered on creating online courses
Training modules on building and evaluating online courses are available online from the California Virtual Campus (CVC). The “courselets” are free to those registered at the CVC professional-development site. To register, go to pdc.cvc.edu. Once registered, log in to the website and look for the CVC Courselets link under PDC Web Services.
