The Sea Ranch
By Donlyn Lyndon, Jim Alinder (photographer), Donald Canty, Lawrence Halprin
Donlyn Lyndon, the Eva Li Professor of Architecture, has collaborated with famous fine-art photographer James Alinder to pay homage to The Sea Ranch, a condominium community 100 miles north of San Francisco, on the far western edge of Sonoma County. Lyndon was a founding partner of MLTW, the architectural firm that designed The Sea Ranch to complement the physical grandeur of its coastal location; renowned landscape designer Lawrence Halprin worked to ensure the buildings’ minimal visual and physical impacts on the landscape.
The Sea Ranch is devoted largely to newly commissioned photographs, more than 300 in all. Together they provide a testament to why the community has spawned many imitators. Along with essays by Donald Canty and Lawrence Halprin, the book includes maps, plans, and detailed descriptions of the houses.
Donlyn Lyndon will be reading from The Sea Ranch at the coastal community itself on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m., and in Berkeley at Builders Booksource, 1817 4th St., at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb 26.
