Three-day celebration for EECS

In celebration of its research accomplishments, and to highlight future goals, the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department will host the Berkeley EECS Annual Research Symposium, “Vista on the Future of Information & Communication Technology,” on Feb. 26 and 27 from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The event will feature talks on bioinformatics by Turing Award winner Richard Karp, organic circuits by Vivek Subramanian, and technology research for developing nations by Inktomi co-founder Eric Brewer.

In addition to discussions of cutting-edge research projects, the symposium will include several tutorials, workshops, and open houses, offering an in-depth look at some of the department’s research centers. A select group of student papers will also be featured in a Student Technical Accomplishments in Research Series (STARS).

Then, on Feb. 28, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., the Computer Science Division will host a 30th Anniversary Celebration. The event will highlight major achievements in Berkeley CS over the last 30 years and explore the future of computer-science research. Among the faculty and alumni speakers featured will be Turing Award winners Richard Karp, Ken Thompson, Butler Lampson, Jim Gray, Niklaus Wirth, and Len Adleman. Also speaking will be EECS alumnus Bill Joy, president of Aspen Smallworks and co-founder of Sun Microsystems.
