Hellman faculty-award applications sought
The Hellman Family Faculty Fund is accepting applications; the deadline is Monday, March 15. The fund provides research support for assistant professors who show capacity for great distinction in their research. This year, $340,000 will be available for awards. Individuals may apply for an overhead-free grant of up to $50,000. Awards will be announced in May.

>b>Resources on depression
The campus has launched a campaign to bring attention to the issue of depression, which affects as many as one in ten college students as well as many others. Components of the campaign, led by University Health Services, include an online resource (http://www.uhs.berkeley.edu/lookforthesigns) offering guidance for identifying depression, when to seek help, and where to find it on campus.

UCSF to host ‘Women Leaders 2004’
On May 10-11, the UC San Francisco Center for Gender Equity will host “Women Leaders 2004: A Symposium for Women in University Settings.”

The two-day symposium looks at the status of women in academia and helps participants develop innovative approaches to challenges and opportunities they face on their campuses. Held every other year since 1998, the event includes a networking reception, entertainment, and 18 interactive workshops.

This year’s presenters include Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth and Fire With Fire: The New Female Power; Eva Jefferson Paterson, civil-rights activist and executive director of the Equal Justice Society; and Janice Mirikitani, executive director of programs at Glide Church in San Francisco.
