UC tops annual list of patent recipients
In 2003, the University of California recorded a total of 439 patents, assuring its place for the 10th consecutive year as a leader among the nation’s universities in developing new patents, according to a report from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

A second life for those old cell phones
Cal Youth and Outdoor Programs has teamed with the Donate a Phone/CALL TO PROTECT campaign to collect old and non-working cell phones. The wireless industry’s CALL TO PROTECT program collects, refurbishes, and reprograms old wireless phones and then resells or donates them (with matching airtime) to victims of domestic violence. CALL TO PROTECT’s wireless phones are pre-programmed to dial 911 and a non-emergency number, so that victims of domestic violence can get help quickly. A portion of the year-round program’s proceeds also benefits Berkeley’s Bear Backer Youth Scholarship Fund.

To donate an old wireless phone, first deactivate its service, then bring it (with battery and charger) to the front desk of the Recreational Sports Facility at 2301 Bancroft Way. Season tickets on sale for 2004 Cal football
Cal football season tickets are now available at http://CalBears.com or by phone at (800) GO BEARS. Gaining momentum on the gridiron, the Golden Bears capped off last season by defeating Virginia Tech at the Insight Bowl. Cal fans can get a preview of next fall’s lineup at the free Blue vs. Gold spring football game at noon on Cal Day, Saturday, April 17, in Memorial Stadium.

I-House documentary to air on KQED
A national PBS documentary about International House will be broadcast on Sunday, Feb. 29, at 2:00 p.m. on KQED-TV. The 30-minute program traces the history and impact of the residential community that has promoted respect between overseas and American students at Berkeley since the 1930s. VHS copies are available for $10 from the Development and Alumni Relations office at I-House. For information, call 642-4128.

For the record . . .
In the caption to a front-page photo of Dennis Kucinich last week, we noted that the Democratic presidential candidate had recently placed third in the Maine party caucuses — but neglected to mention that he had placed third in Washington state’s Democratic caucuses as well. We regret the oversight.
