The following individuals and organizations will be honored by the School of Public Health at this year’s Public Health Heroes Awards Ceremony on March 19:
International Hero
Larry Brilliant, M.D., M.P.H., founder of the Society for Epidemiology and Voluntary Assistance (SEVA), for his exemplary work in eradicating smallpox and blindness throughout the world.
National Hero
Steven A. Schroeder, M.D., Distinguished Professor of Health and Health Care at the University of California, San Francisco, for his leadership in bridging medicine and public health and for putting tobacco control onto the national policy agenda.
Regional Hero
Dolores Huerta, President, Dolores C. Huerta Foundation; Co-Founder, United Farmworkers Movement; Vice President Emeritus, UFW AFL-CIO, for her lifelong contributions to the improvement of health status and health conditions of farm workers.
Organizational Heroes
Alameda County Public Health Department, Contra Costa Health Services, and the City of Berkeley Public Health Division, for their contributions to improving the public’s health in the East Bay, for their cutting-edge programs and policies, and for their commitment to training the next generation of public-health professionals through mentoring and teaching.
