For the record . . .
In our March 11 issue, an article on the discovery of fossilized hominid teeth was accompanied by two images: the upper and lower teeth of a modern female chimpanzee, and a comparative view of the fossil teeth.

The former image was incorrectly oriented; the correct image is reproduced above.

Campus accreditation is now official
At its February meeting, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) renewed UC Berkeley’s institutional accreditation, following a two-year process of self-reflection, and review by outside educators. The association commended the campus for the “considerable engagement of many members of the university community, especially key leaders of the university administration and faculty” during the process.

Berkeley used the newly revised WASC accreditation process to develop recommendations for improving undergraduate education. Documents related to the campus accreditation effort, including the visiting-team reports, are available online at education.berkeley.edu/accreditation. Members of the campus community are invited to send comments, questions, or suggestions about the accreditation process or next steps to accreditation@berkeley.edu.

Nominations due March 22 for ‘Excellence in Management’ awards
Each year, the Berkeley Staff Assembly (BSA) and the chancellor honor outstanding managers and supervisors with the campus’s Excellence in Management Awards. The award is open to employees at all levels; nominees must have supervisory or managerial responsibilities of at least one year in their current position and must be nominated by at least one-half of the staff they supervise.

Forward nominations by March 22 to Faye Lawson, Haas School of Business, 132 Cheit Hall #1900, and/or Annette Lewis, School of Public Health, 140 Warren Hall #7360. The Excellence in Management Committee will review the nominations and notify the winners. Awards will be presented at a May 10 ceremony at International House.

Sponsor a ‘Take Our Children to Work’ event; register by April 2
The chancellor is encouraging all departments to host an activity for children of all ages on Thursday, April 22, when the campus celebrates Take Our Children to Work Day.

For information on getting involved, contact Laquel Wright at laquel_w@uclink.berkeley.edu. All departments responding by April 2 will receive a university umbrella, featuring a pattern adapted from a Japanese ceramic plate found in the Hearst Museum collection.

Nominees sought for community-service awards
The Chancellor’s Community Service Awards are given annually to members of the campus community who have made notable contributions as volunteers in community organizations. The deadline for nominations is noon, Monday, April 5.

Information and nomination forms for this year’s awards are available online at students.berkeley.edu/calcorps/awards.html. For information not available online, contact Devin Kinyon at the Cal Corps Public Service Center (kinyon@berkeley.edu or 643-0306). Winners will be honored at an April 29 ceremony at the Tang Center.
