ASUC President Kris Cuaresma-Primm (left) chats with students Alex Madrid and Rachel Stewart at Monday’s kickoff of Disability Awareness Week. Madrid, a junior, is the ASUC’s liaison with Disabled Student Services, a newly created position.

Like Cuaresma-Primm, Chancellor Berdahl and Vice Chancellor Horace Mitchell tried out a wheelchair during the week, in part to raise their own awareness of the challenges facing students with disabilities. They joined the students on Sproul Plaza after a strenuous journey from California Hall.

“It’s pretty hard work,” said Berdahl — noting the spots that had presented the toughest grades.
