Cupcakes and a farewell to the Berdahls to mark Charter Day
The campus's annual Charter Day celebration will occur this year on Thursday, April 15, with a variety of events that will include games, blue-and-gold cupcakes, and a procession of faculty, staff, students, and alumni to the 3 p.m. Charter Day ceremony at Zellerbach Hall. There, a special event in honor of Chancellor and Mrs. Robert Berdahl will be held; the chancellor is stepping down in June after seven years in that position. The Peter E. Haas Public Service Award will also be presented to Corinne Jan '76 at the event.

The public is invited. For details (including ticket information for the Zellerbach ceremony), visit www.urel.berkeley.edu/charterday/.

Brian Maxwell memorial is April 2
A public memorial service for former Berkeley track star and coach Brian Maxwell will be held at noon on Friday, April 2, in Haas Pavilion. Maxwell and his wife, Jennifer (also a Berkeley grad), were generous contributors to the campus, having donated to the Haas Pavilion renovation, the athletic department's Academic Study Center, and the turf-replacement costs for Kleeberger Field (now the Maxwell Family Field).

Nominations open for Sustainability Awards
The campus's first annual Sustainability Awards will be announced on Earth Day, April 22, at the UC Berkeley Sustainability Summit (held in the past as the Recycling Summit). Nominations for the award, which is sponsored by the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability, are due by Friday, April 9.

The Sustainability Awards are intended to recognize contributions to CACS's goals of engaging the campus in an ongoing dialogue about reaching environmental sustainability, integrating environmental sustainability with existing campus programs, and instilling a culture of sustainable long-range planning and forward-thinking design.

Any member of the Cal community is eligible to submit nominations or be nominated for the award. For nomination forms and details, visit recycle.berkeley.edu/sustainability/.

Junior Faculty Fellowship applications due next week
Regents' Junior Faculty Fellowships provide summer salary awards in the amount of $5,000 for junior faculty. Interested faculty should submit application materials by Friday, April 9. Deadlines for the department chairs and deans who support those applications follow in successive weeks: department chairs on April 16, deans on April 23.

Awards will be announced in June. For information and the application, visit vpaafw.chance.berkeley.edu/regents.html or contact Carolyn Capps in the Academic Affairs Office at 642-1963 or at capps@berkeley.edu.

Plates and a picnic for TOCTW
The campus will participate in Take Our Children to Work Day on Thursday, April 22. Campus employees are encouraged to bring their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or any young person they feel would benefit from being introduced to the university. The day will culminate in a picnic with the chancellor from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Memorial Glade, where Cal families can enjoy free food, music, Cal athletes, Oski, balloon artists, and more.

The chancellor encourages departments to participate in this community-building event by hosting an activity for the children, young and old, who will be on campus that day. Contact Laquel Wright at laquel_w@uclink.berkeley.edu for information on how your department can be involved. All departments responding by Friday, April 2, will receive a university umbrella featuring a pattern adapted from a Japanese ceramic plate from the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum collection.

For the record …
In a photo caption in our March 18 issue, Morgan, the UC Police Department’s newest bomb-sniffing dog, was incorrectly referred to as a male. She isn't, and we regret the error.
