Kudos for Bancroft’s digital grizzly exhibit
The Bancroft Library has received the 2004 Katherine Kyes Leab and David J. Leab current-exhibition award, presented by the Association of College and Research Libraries’ rare books and manuscripts section. The Bancroft is the first-time winner in the newly created electronic exhibitions category, for its online exhibit “Bear in Mind: The California Grizzly at The Bancroft Library” (bancroft.berkeley.edu/Exhibits/bearinmind/).

The site was created by a team of library staffers — curators Bill Brown and Susan Snyder, designer Brooke Dykman, and digital-image coordinator Erica Nordmeier. The review committee lauded the site’s “creativity and continuity of design.” It noted the choice and display of images, ease of navigation, use of state-of-the-art coding techniques, and “an admirable dedication to making the site accessible to disabled viewers.”

An awards ceremony will be held June 27 at the association’s conference in Orlando, Fla.

Leo Goodman receives honorary degree
Leo A. Goodman, Class of 1938 Professor in the sociology and statistics departments, has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree by the University of Michigan. The degree was conferred in recognition of Goodman’s “major contributions to statistics and social and behavioral science, and in particular for his development of new methods for the analysis of survey data as a sophisticated branch of statistical science….His work has fundamentally transformed quantitative research methods in the social sciences … by providing a set of interrelated statistical tools that enable researchers to examine qualitative/categorical data with scientific rigor.”

Goodman, who has been on the faculty at Berkeley since 1986, is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.
