Campus departments to share best practices
Workplace success stories will be spotlighted Wednesday, April 28, when speakers from five campus departments discuss workplace practices that maximize employee input in managerial decision-making and improve work environments. The brownbag-lunch event takes place from 12:10 to 2 p.m. in 370 Dwinelle. For information, e-mail staffeeo@berkeley.edu or call 642-5002.

Friday’s Chávez Center event honors building’s namesake
In 1997, Berkeley students mobilized to rename a campus building in honor of the late labor leader César Chávez. To commemorate this struggle — which culminated in the naming of the César E. Chávez Student Center — and honor Chávez, about a dozen campus programs housed in the building will hold an evening celebration.

The event, which features speakers, performers, music, and food, takes place from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 23 in the atrium of the Chávez Center. The public is invited.

‘World peace: working for the future’
Each year, 10 Rotary World Peace Scholars from around the world are funded by the Rotary Foundation for two years of graduate study at Berkeley, emphasizing human rights, conflict resolution, and peace studies. On Sunday, April 25, the first class of Rotary World Peace Scholars will summarize their Berkeley experience, current research, and plans for promoting global peace. James Lacy, chair of the foundation, will also speak.

The event will be held in the Wells Fargo Room, Cheit Hall Level 4, Haas School of Business, from 1 to 5 p.m. For information, see www.ias.berkeley.edu or phone 643-4751.

Berdahl Scholarship to begin next year
Three dozen students will have the chance to attend Berkeley, thanks to a new scholarship established in the name of Chancellor Berdahl and his wife, Peg, by George Miller, a philanthropist and trustee of the UC Berkeley Foundation. Miller has been a generous backer of Cal students through the George A. Miller Scholars Program, serving low-income, first-generation college students who have transferred to Berkeley from Bay Area community colleges. The new Robert M. and Margaret Berdahl Scholarship Program, Miller’s gift to the couple with whom he attended high school, will begin in 2005 and run through 2014, offering a total of 36 students a two-year stipend of just under $10,000 each.

For the record…
In a photo caption in last week’s issue we misidentified student housing under construction at the corner of Channing Way and Bowditch St. as being located at Channing Way and Ellsworth St. Though a Channing/Ellsworth housing project may someday be built, it is at best several years away from being photographable. We regret the error.
