Applications sought for Sautter tech innovation award
The Larry L. Sautter Award for Innovation in Information Technology, named for a former top administrator at UC Riverside, is open to faculty and staff from all UC campuses, offices, and labs. The honor recognizes information- technology innovations that have the potential to improve how the University operates.
The Sautter Award is presented in two
categories: Golden Awards for best practices and innovation/entrepreneurship, and Silver Awards for achievement in computing. Applications must be submitted by June 1, 2004. Award winners will be announced at the UC Computing Services Conference, to be held Aug.1-3, 2004, at UC Riverside.

Academic Senate to hold regular and special sessions
The Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate will hold a special meeting on Thursday, May 6, to consider a proposed resolution on the University’s response to the USA Patriot Act and related measures. This session is in addition to the 2004 Spring Meeting of the Berkeley Division, on Thursday, April 29, at which Senate members will discuss UC’s management of the national laboratories, among other matters.

Both meetings are from 3 to 5 p.m. in Sibley Auditorium, Bechtel Engineering Center. A copy of the Patriot Act proposal may be found on the Academic Senate website, at academic-senate.berkeley.edu/division/divisions.html.

Campus academic openings have a dedicated website
To help ensure that all academic position openings at Berkeley are widely advertised, all approved job advertisements are now listed on the campus’s Academic Employment Opportunities Website, found at fea.chance.berkeley.edu/AcademicEmployment.htm. Jobs advertised on the site automatically appear on the website of the Bay Area Higher Education Recruitment Consortium, bayareaherc.org. Mail listings to advertisements@ berkeley.edu. Watch ‘Media at War,’ same-sex-marriage events online
Archived webcasts of last month’s campus conference on “Media at War: Understanding the U.S. Invasion and Occupation of Iraq” are viewable online at journalism.berkeley.edu/conf/mediaatwar/schedule.html.

Also online is an April 19 campus symposium on same-sex marriage, focusing on legal and constitutional issues. Panelists covered the spectrum — from a representative of the pro-gay Human Rights Campaign to a speaker from Exodus International, a Christian group that advocates curing homosexuality through faith. Wireless-network access points available
The campus has received the second of
two grants from Hewlett Packard to study the effect of wireless Internet access on student learning and satisfaction in large undergraduate courses. The extension grant provides Berkeley with approximately 240 wireless access points, which will be integrated into AirBears (airbears.berkeley.edu), the campus wireless network.

The access points themselves are available for free to departments on a competitive basis. Principal investigator Philip Stark is overseeing their distribution to departments and units willing to pay for installation in locations that serve campus students.The installation charge, including integration with AirBears, is approximately $735.

Proposals are due by 5 p.m., Friday, May 14. E-mail Stark at stark@stat.berkeley.edu. Propose a specific location for the access point(s), explain how students will be served, and confirm willingness to pay for installation.
