Gayley Road repaving continues; campus pathways also being improved
Resurfacing of Gayley Road (from Hearst Ave. to Rimway Road) and a portion of University Drive (which leads from the East Gate into campus past Evans Hall) began earlier this month and is nearly complete. The roads were repaved at the end of last week; remaining work on the new surfaces includes striping and sign installation. The project will also repair the sidewalks on Gayley and improve handicap ramps. This work is expected to continue through early August. Hours of construction are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, in keeping with the City of Berkeley’s noise ordinance; on most days, construction activities will end around 4 p.m.

Traffic on Gayley Road and access to the campus at East Gate will continue to be interrupted throughout the project. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible. Signs in the area direct pedestrians to access the campus by using the new stairs behind Founder’s Rock, the covered stairs between Donner Lab and the Stanley Hall job site, or the south side of East Gate (near Chemistry). Special signage has been posted for disabled access.

Paving, scheduled for the current week, will be followed by finishing work on Gayley Road and University Drive, now scheduled for the week of July 26.

Also, beginning this week, Physical Plant – Campus Services is planning to begin repair work on a few campus paths and roadways, including the path near the southeast corner of California Hall (close to the main entrance); the path between Wheeler Hall and Dwinelle Plaza (a portion of the main route from Sather Gate to Memorial Glade); and the path leading from Dwinelle Plaza to Strawberry Creek.

The repairs are planned for limited areas of asphalt that are especially damaged and uneven. The work will create limited and temporary changes to pedestrian and vehicle access in the areas of construction, though repair of these areas is scheduled to be complete before the start of the fall semester.

Acting administrators at the helm
In the wake of the departure of Vice Chancellor – Budget and Finance Jim Hyatt earlier this month, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Paul Gray is fulfilling that function until August 15, at which time Professor William Webster will take over the acting role until a permanent replacement is hired. Webster, recently retired as Vice Provost – Academic Planning and Facilities, will remain in that position in an acting capacity until the August 15 transition date.

Also this month, former Vice Chancellor – Business and Administrative Services Horace Mitchell assumed the presidency of California State University, Bakersfield. Steve Lustig, Assistant Vice Chancellor – University Health and Counseling Services and a 20-year campus leader, has this week taken on the VC–BAS role on an acting basis, pending a national search for Mitchell’s successor.

Said Chancellor Berdahl: “The departures of Horace Mitchell and James Hyatt will afford the new chancellor an opportunity to review the current organizational structure and establish his or her own management team and vision for Berkeley.”
