Hargrove Music Library holds grand opening this Sunday

The music department plans to celebrate the opening of its Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library with a day of events on Sunday, Sept. 26. The grand opening, which is free to the public, begins with a scholarly symposium on manuscript “treasures” in the music library’s stellar collection (125 Morrison Hall from 9 a.m. to noon). In the afternoon, starting at 2:15 p.m., campus musicians will offer a short recital of music for violin, cello, and harpsichord from the library’s 18th-century Tartini Collection, also in Morrison Hall. From 3:15 to 5 p.m. the action will move to the Hargrove Library itself, across from Morrison and Hertz halls, where there will be a dedication ceremony and reception. Krasny’s ‘Forum’ to broadcast live from Pauley Ballroom

On Wednesday, Sept. 29, KQED Public Radio’s “Forum With Michael Krasny” will broadcast live from Pauley Ballroom East, in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union. The show will run from 9 to 11 a.m. and will cover two topics — proposed changes to UC’s undergraduate eligibility standards (in the first hour), followed by student activism at Berkeley and elsewhere, 40 years after the Free Speech Movement. Special discounts offered for Canadian ballet

Campus faculty and staff are eligible for a two-for-one discount for Cal Performances’ productions of the National Ballet of Canada on Thursday, Sept. 30, and Friday, Oct. 1. To take advantage of the offer, call Cal Performances’ ticket office at 642-9988 and ask for a faculty and staff cyber discount. Free tickets are limited to two per faculty or staff member; the discount is not applicable to prior purchases. Discounted tickets are subject to availability. A faculty or staff ID will be required in order to pick up the tickets at the ticket or will-call window.

David Brin to speak on security and freedom

On Friday, Oct. 1, in a lecture titled “A World Filled With Cameras: Security at the Cost of Freedom? Or Can We Have Both?,” scientist, novelist, nonfiction writer, and political commentator David Brin will consider the “choice” often posed — by security experts on the one hand, civil libertarians on the other — between safety and freedom, asking whether such a tradeoff is necessary. “For generations,” he says, “normal people have grown detached from responsibility for protecting and maintaining civilization, handing ever more of that task to paid professionals. But on 9/11 … private cell phones spread the word and saved lives quicker than official media. And the sole effective action to thwart terror was taken by individuals, armed with intelligence and communication tools outside official channels. What does this say about the coming era?”

Brin is winner of Hugo and Nebula awards for his fiction and the American Library Association’s Freedom of Speech Award. On Oct. 1 he will speak between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. in the Lipman Room, Barrows Hall.

School of Public Health to name library for Wellness Letter founder

A ceremony will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 1, to celebrate the naming of the Public Health Library after Professor Emeritus Sheldon Margen. Located at 42 Warren Hall, the library will be a tribute to Margen’s intellectual, professional, and financial contributions to UC and to Berkeley’s School of Public Health. Margen founded the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter 20 years ago; since that time, its royalties have contributed approximately $11 million to the School of Public Health. Margen has also donated a large number of books and journals from his personal collections to the library.

J-School scholarship fund honors ’04 grad

The School of Journalism has established a scholarship fund in memory of Simon Kinsella, class of 2004, who died Aug. 18 in San Francisco.
