Election reactions? Send us your thoughts
The Berkeleyan is interested in what members of the campus community are thinking and feeling about the 2004 election. Were you involved in election activities? What does the outcome (national, state, or local) mean to you? What are your thoughts about your life and the future of the nation in the aftermath? If you are disappointed with the results, what, if anything, gives you hope? If you are pleased, what in particular are you pleased about, and do you have any reservations?
Staff and faculty are invited to send comments to berkeleyan@pa.urel.berkeley.edu; we’ll publish a selection of reader responses in a coming issue.
It’s Big Game Week — think big!
The Cal-Stanford Big Game is just around the corner — on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Memorial Stadium — and so is a streak of pre-game activities, beginning with the traditional Battle of the Bands at Pier 39 at 1 p.m. this Sunday, Nov. 14. (Tickets are still available for the Berkeley–San Francisco round-trip cruise to the band event aboard the Empress Hornblower; call (800) On-The-Bay.) Cal boosters — jazzed by the Bears’ powerful 2004 lineup — can also attend the Big Sail from San Francisco’s Sir Francis Yacht Club, the Big Freeze at Berkeley Iceland, and the Big Splash at Spieker Pool, to name just some of the planned Big Game Week activities.
Also on the schedule is the Big Sing-Off Show and Dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 16, sponsored by UC Choral Ensembles. The event, to be held from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. at the Lipman Room, Barrows Hall, includes dinner and the spirited singing of traditional Cal songs. The battle of a cappella choral groups from the two campuses begins at 8 p.m. in Wheeler Auditorium. To make a reservation for the $30 dinner-show package, contact Carol Suveda at 643-2662 or carols@sma.berkeley.edu by Sunday, Nov. 14; leave your name, number in your party, full credit-card information, and a daytime phone number. For tickets to the 8 p.m. sing-off only ($10 for the public, $5 for students), go to tickets.berkeley.edu or call 642-3880. Sing-off tickets can also be purchased at the door.

The spirit of giving, 2004
Each year, the Campus Charitable Campaign calls on Berkeley staff and faculty to pledge support for deserving charities, while at the same time of year campus employees organize efforts to collect food, toys, and gifts for at-risk children and the elderly. This year, the programs are joining forces for the the Week of Caring — Campus Charitable Campaign, Dec. 1 through 8.
As a bonus, this year giving is a two-way street. Chancellor Birgeneau and campus units will show their appreciation for the campus community by providing gifts to staff and faculty, from complimentary tickets to Cal basketball games to free UC Extension classes.
For details, watch your e-mail inbox next week for a message from the chancellor, with links to information on featured programs and charities for the 2004 holiday season.
Los Angeles Times reporter to deliver Regents’ Lecture
Former Los Angeles Times reporter Victor Merina will deliver a Regents’ Lecture on “The Message of the Media, the Power of the Personal,” on Friday, Nov. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in 105 North Gate Hall. Merina was a member of the newspaper’s projects team and shared in its 1993 Pulitzer Prize for spot news coverage of the 1992 L.A. riots. Since leaving the paper, he has continued to contribute essays to its Sunday Opinion and Magazine sections. He is currently a senior fellow with the Annenberg Institute for Justice and Journalism at the University of Southern California; he also works with the Freedom Forum and the Poynter Institute for Media Studies.
