Food in California Indian Culture

>Eight years ago research anthropologist Ira Jacknis curated the nation's first exhibit on the food and food customs of the California Indians, at the Hearst Museum of Anthropology. His new anthology shares its name with the 1997 exhibit and, as part of the museum's "Classics in California Anthropology" series, traces the culinary history of this country's first inhabitants - drawing on the work of some of Berkeley's premier anthropologists, including Alfred Kroeber, Samuel Barrett, Julian Steward, and Cora du Bois. Woven in with the anthropological accounts are the voices of Native Californians who recall - or remember stories about - the old foods, customs, and methods of preparation. Photographs depicting food collection and preparation round out this collection.
