Staff invited to attend Berkeley Staff Assembly luncheon

The Berkeley Staff Assembly will hold a brown-bag luncheon for new and prospective members on Thursday, Oct. 27, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in 60 Barrows. Meet fellow staff and learn about this year's campuswide holiday toy, food, and gift drive, plus the benefits of membership in BSA, a staff organization open to all staff employees. Bring a bag lunch; drinks, desserts, and raffle prizes will be provided. RSVP by Oct. 24 to blossom@berkeley.edu or 642-1622.

UHS flu-shot clinic dates announced

The Tang Center will offer drop-in flu-shot clinics on Friday, Oct. 28; Friday, Nov. 4; Wednesday, Nov. 16; and Thursday, Dec. 1.

All clinics will be from noon to 6 p.m. on the first floor of the Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way. The cost is $25; adults 18 and over from the campus and community are welcome. For updates, visit www.uhs.berkeley.edu or call 642-9553.

Holloway poetry reading Oct. 25

Poets Carl Phillips and Eleanor Johnson will read from their work on Tuesday, Oct. 25, as part of the English department's Holloway Poetry Series. The reading takes place at 7 p.m. in the Maude Fife Room, 315 Wheeler; there will be a colloquium with the poets at 5:30 p.m. in 301 Wheeler. Phillips is the author of seven books of poems, including The Rest of Love (a National Book Award finalist and winner of the Theodore Roethke Memorial Prize and the Thom Gunn Award for Gay Male Poetry) and The Tether. Eleanor Johnson is a graduate-student medievalist and poet in the English department.

Berkeley Rep discounts for Cal Rec members

The Berkeley Repertory Theater is offering Cal Recreational Sports members a 50-percent discount on preview performances of all its shows this season. Previews are the first four performances, before the show opens to the press and begins its regular run.

Arts-consortium funding proposals for 2006-07 due Dec. 1

The Consortium for the Arts invites campus faculty, students, and staff to submit proposals for major arts projects to take place in the 2006-07 academic year. The consortium allocates funds (usually between $3,000 and $10,000) to campus departments and presenting units to support collaborative, interdisciplinary arts projects that enhance the vitality of the arts on campus and provoke intellectual conversation about the arts. For details about criteria, requirements, and application procedures, contact Associate Director Michele Rabkin at micheler@berkeley.edu. The proposal submission deadline is 5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 1. There is a separate process for requesting support for projects taking place in the current academic year.

Botanical Garden workshop features water-wise gardening

Using examples from the UC Botanical Garden, horticulturists Jerry Parsons, Nathan Smith, and Anthony Garza will share ideas on creating a dramatic, water-efficient garden at a daylong workshop on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Titled "A Global Palette of Plants for Inspired Waterwise Gardening," the workshop features slide presentations on design ideas for creating year-round interest using texture, foliage, and form, as well as tips on siting and plant combinations. Participants will receive a copy of the garden's new, color book, Waterwise Gardening Tour, as well as lunch and refreshments. Plants from the book will be for sale. Fees ($45 for non-members, $40 for members) include garden admission. Registration is required; call 643-2755 ext.03 to register. Class space is limited.

Open forum on healthcare and aging

Campus and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory researchers interested in the fields of aging and technologies for supporting a graying population are invited to attend an open forum on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Seaborg Room of the Faculty Club. The meeting, conceived by Beth Burnside, vice chancellor for research, is hosted by the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society.
