College of Letters and Science seeks new dean for Division of Arts and Humanities
20 October 2005
A truncated version of this notice that appeared in last issue's "News Briefs" column omitted key information about this job posting, including the correct deadline for applications and nominations.
Applications and nominations are being accepted now through Nov. 10, 2005, for the position of Dean of Arts and Humanities. The dean is responsible for the administration of the Arts and Humanities Division, reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. The appointment will be effective July 1, 2006, and normally lasts for five years. The search is restricted to full professors at UC Berkeley.
The Dean of Arts and Humanities has administrative responsibility for 34 units, including regular academic departments, interdisciplinary programs (such as Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology, Film Studies, and the Townsend Center), and instructional support units, such as the Berkeley Language Center. The Arts and Humanities Division comprises more autonomous academic units than any other division on campus, currently with 248 FTE and 5,626 students. It has a permanent budget of $34 million in state funds. The dean's responsibility encompasses academic and non-academic personnel, teaching, research and operational budgets, diversification and outreach, as well as physical facilities and instructional technology.
The Dean of Arts and Humanities meets regularly with the other deans of the College of Letters and Science to discuss matters of mutual concern, such as collegewide policy issues, shared administrative resources, and interdepartmental instructional programs. The dean also communicates the interests and needs of Arts and Humanities to other campus units (such as the Library, the Office of Educational Development, the Offices of Budget and Planning, Physical Plant, and Planning, Design, and Construction.) He/She also serves as primary representative of the Berkeley campus to the systemwide President's Advisory Committee for Research in the Humanities. The dean is an important advocate for Arts and Humanities on the Berkeley campus and an active participant in fundraising on behalf of both Arts and Humanities and the College.
Faculty, students, alumni, and staff are encouraged to submit names of potential candidates. Applications and nominations may be sent in writing to the search committee c/o Rita Gardner, 200 California Hall, #1500 or via e-mail to rgardner@berkeley.edu. All nominations and applications will be kept confidential.
