We'll take next week off for the Thanksgiving holiday and return to our regular publishing schedule with the issue of Nov. 30.

Regents defer decision on southeast campus projects until early December

A committee of the UC Regents on Tuesday voted to delay consideration of plans for the southeast corner of the Berkeley campus, including construction of a Student-Athlete High Performance Center, saying it needed more time to review late-arriving materials. At issue is approval of the center's design and certification of the environmental impact report (EIR) that examines the campus's overall Southeast Campus Integrated Projects program, which aims to renovate and seismically strengthen California Memorial Stadium and better integrate athletics and academics at Berkeley.

The delay will give members of the regents' Committee on Grounds and Buildings more time to review the city of Berkeley's comments on the EIR and responses from campus EIR experts. The committee, which is authorized to certify the EIR and give final approval of the student-athlete center design, will decide on the matter at a special session in early December.

The committee did approve an interim financing model for the student-athlete center, allowing the campus to proceed with planning for the new building. That action was set to go to the full Board of Regents for ratification at its Los Angeles meeting on Thursday, Nov. 29.

Campus officials said the delay does not affect the proposed schedule for the new student-athlete center, nor a commitment to construct the center without displacing home football games.
