Campus energy efforts' new Web presence
A new campus website, Energy@Berkeley, showcases energy-related research and activities at Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Found at energy.berkeley.edu, the site spotlights work relating to climate change, energy production, and energy use, economics, and policy, with links to relevant research centers, courses, news stories, and faculty experts.
Latest report on UC pension fund is available online
The latest actuarial report on the funded status of the UC Retirement Plan (UCRP) is available on the Board of Regents' website. The report covers the period of July 1, 2005, through June 30, 2006. See newscenter.berkeley.edu/goto/UCRP_0506.
Academic Senate calls for Henkin Citation nominations
The Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate invites Senate faculty and emeriti to nominate candidates for the Leon Henkin Citation for Distinguished Service. The award was instituted by the Committee on Student Diversity and Academic Development (previously the Special Scholarships Committee, co-founded by Henkin in 1963) "to acknowledge faculty whose work toward diversity has been in keeping with the passion exhibited by Henkin," a professor emeritus of mathematics who died in November 2006.
In the call for nominations, Senate Chair William Drummond wrote: "Leon Henkin devoted his academic career to increasing equity and access to higher education and to promoting the academic, personal, and professional success of Berkeley students from groups traditionally underrepresented in academic disciplines. He recognized over 40 years ago the necessity and appropriateness of including scholars from many different backgrounds into the intellectual endeavors of the University and of society. He recognized very early on that faculty who took up these efforts would not enjoy rewards or even approval from their disciplines, and he worked tirelessly to change this situation while focusing on students' success."

New UCLA chancellor and systemwide administrators named
On Dec. 21 the UC Board of Regents appointed biologist Gene Block as chancellor of the UCLA campus. Block, 58, has served at the University of Virginia since 1978, most recently as vice president and provost. He will take office at UCLA on or before Aug. 1, 2007, with an annual salary of $416,000.
Two new executives for the UC system, as of Jan. 1, are Judy Sakaki, vice president for student affairs, and Charles Robinson, general counsel of the regents and vice president for legal affairs. Sakaki, 53, former vice chancellor for student affairs at UC Davis, now oversees UC undergraduate and transfer admissions, student financial support, undergraduate and graduate campus life, and student academic-preparation programs, for an annual salary of $238,000. Robinson, 49, oversees a staff of 40 attorneys and 45 other staff at the UC Office of the President; his annual salary is $400,000.
CAL Overstock offers free 'e-waste' recycling events
Members of the campus community and the public can dispose of their personal computer equipment on Friday, Jan. 19, at a free Computer E-waste Recycling Public Service Event at the CAL Overstock and Surplus Den.
Located at 1000 Folger Ave. (off San Pablo Avenue, two blocks south of Ashby), the campus's Property Management surplus unit will accept the following items: laptops, monitors, CPUs, keyboards, computer mice, and televisions. Those dropping off "e-waste" are required to complete a brief form describing the item to be recycled.
Computer recycling drop-off hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Next month's recycling event is slated for Friday, Feb. 16; additional dates will be announced on the CAL Overstock and Surplus Den website, overstock.berkeley.edu. For information, phone 643-8232 or e-mail sreckler@berkeley.edu.
