Sandra Camillo

Longtime campus employee Sandra Ann Camillo, 50, suffered a brain aneurysm at her home in Fairfield on Dec. 13. She never regained consciousness, dying at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento on Dec. 19.

Camillo began her campus career in 1982, as an administrative assistant in the Department of Civil Engineering. In 1984 she joined the Athletic Department, serving as director of basketball operations for the men's basketball program until 1997. In that role she worked with head coaches Dick Kuchen, Lou Campanelli, Todd Bozeman, and Ben Braun.

After a time working in the athletic travel office she moved into facilities scheduling, handling that complex chore for Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreational Sports, and Physical Education.

"Sandy performed a critical function for our sports, recreation, and instructional programs," said Mike Huff, assistant athletic director for facilities management. "She fully understood the scope and nuances of activities ranging from student-organized club functions to high-profile events."

Camillo was born Aug. 19, 1956, in Martinez, and was raised in Fairfield by her parents, Salvador and Evelyn Camillo. There she attended Armijo High, becoming active in many athletic competitions, including basketball, softball, volleyball, field hockey, and badminton. She had been a statewide bowling champion since grade school.

Camillo attended Solano Community College before transferring to Cal State Hayward, where in 1979 she received her bachelor's degree in English.

In her off-hours, Sandy enjoyed renovating her childhood home, gardening, sewing and knitting, and taking care of her cats. Anyone interested in adopting her cats can contact Civic Feline Clinic at (925) 930-9226.

Camillo, who received a Special Performance Award from the campus in 1993, is survived by her boyfriend Richard Shelton, several cousins, and many friends.

There will be a memorial to honor Camillo's life on Tuesday, Jan. 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Haas Pavilion Club Room; the program will be followed by a reception.
