Hellman Fund applications from assistant professors due March 12
The Hellman Family Faculty Fund is accepting applications; the deadline is Monday, March 12. The fund provides research support for assistant professors who show capacity for great distinction in their research. This year, $500,000 will be available for awards; individuals may apply for an overhead-free grant of up to $50,000. Awards will be announced in May.

Student choral groups to deliver Singing Valentine-Grams
UC Choral Ensembles is again offering Singing Valentine-Grams on campus and in the city of Berkeley on Valentine's Day and for several days prior. The "gram" includes a serenade of two love songs in four-part harmony, accompanied by a long-stemmed rose and a personalized card. Times of delivery will be Sunday, Feb. 11 (noon to 9 p.m.); Tuesday, Feb. 13 (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.); and Wednesday, Feb. 14 (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Prices range from $20 for delivery to a student on campus to $30 for non-students on campus and $40 for non-students off campus in most of Berkeley (past customers get a $5 discount).
To arrange for delivery of a singing telegram, go to 72 César Chávez (basement level) weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., at least two days before delivery. For information, contact UC Choral Ensembles at 642-3880 or valentines@ucchoral.berkeley.edu.
Nominations due Feb. 20 for 2007-08 Regents' Professors and Lecturers
The deadline for applications for the 2007-08 Regents' Professorships and Lectureships Program is Tuesday, Feb. 20. The program brings to campus distinguished people whose careers in arts, letters, sciences, or business have been substantially outside the academic profession. Appointments of Regents' Professors are usually for one semester; Regents' Lecturers ordinarily serve two to three weeks. I-House offers room-and-board assistance
Room-and-board assistance for international students, U.S. citizens, and permanent residents is being made available by International House for the 2007-08 academic year and the fall 2007 semester. Those eligible are graduate or upper-division students who will have already completed one academic year at Berkeley and who demonstrate financial need.
Applications are available online at ihouse.berkeley.edu, or in person in the foyer of the Human Resources and Residence offices at International House. The application deadline is March 1.
Free bike licenses available on Sproul Plaza
The UC Police Department is offering free California bicycle licenses and license renewals to campus affiliates once a week.
For spring 2007, this service is offered from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays on upper Sproul Plaza. A new license is valid for three years, as is a bike-license renewal. On campus and in the city of Berkeley, bicycles are required to have a valid license; a license also increases the likelihood of recovery in case of theft.
New P&T director named
Noel Pinto has been appointed director of parking and transportation, effective Jan. 16, replacing Nad Permaul. Pinto has more than 25 years of experience in the field, having managed parking operations for San Francisco International Airport, the city of Oakland, the Port of Oakland, and private industry.
Steve Kang '75 named UC Merced chancellor
UC Santa Cruz engineering dean Sung-Mo (Steve) Kang has been named chancellor of UC Merced. Recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in electrical engineering, Kang, 61, is known for building UCSC's engineering program and fostering relationships with the community and with industry leaders both locally and internationally. He received his Ph.D. from Berkeley in 1975 and has collaborated with researchers at Berkeley and Merced involved in the multicampus Center for Information Technology and Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS). Kang will take office around March 1, at an annual salary of $295,000.
Report details UC's sustainability progress
At the Board of Regents' meeting Jan.16, UC administrators delivered their annual report on UC's progress in implementing its green-building, clean-energy, and sustainable-transportation policies. The report highlights UC accomplishments in 2006.

IGS conference MP3s feature global poverty, university governance, women in politics
Audio files of "Governing the Academy: Who's the Boss?" - a conference held at Berkeley in December - are available for listening and download, in MP3 format, at igs.berkeley.edu/events/highered_conference.htm. The conference addressed national trends and critical issues in university governance at the University of California and nationwide.
