The Scholar's Workstation is moving to Hearst Field Annex
After 16 years in University Hall, The Scholar's Workstation (TSW) will be moving to Hearst Field Annex, Building D, during spring break, March 23 to 30. TSW will be closed during those dates and expects to reopen during the first week in April. The move was prompted by the demand for academic space on and close to campus.
TSW's new location - directly behind the Pacific Film Archive Theatre, near the corner of Bancroft Way and Bowditch Street - will be a temporary home for Information Services and Technology's newly formed Technology Acquisition and Sales Division. Units involved in the move include TSW's computer store and will-call office, Computer Repair and Support, and Cellular Devices and Services. A search for a long-term space will begin immediately after the move.
See the TSW website (www.tsw.berkeley.edu) for updated information related to online ordering, in-store purchases, and delivery-date estimates during March, or e-mail april@tsw.berkeley.edu for information.
Students sweep 2007 Hoffer Essay contest
Two students took the honors in this year's Lili Fabilli and Eric Hoffer Essay Contest. Students Xiaolu Ning and Samuel Pittman won $1,500 each for their laconic essays on the assigned topic: "Whatever You Say, Say Nothing." The contest judge deemed the former's essay "the best kind of modern personal essay that manages to engage us in the story but not make the story the point." Pittman focused on identity and language in an essay limning the "Don't ask, don't tell" principle. "Eric Hoffer might have been shocked by the subject in his day," the judge wrote, "but he would have appreciated the directness and compactness."
There were 18 entries for this year's contest, which is open to all campus-community members and has a 500-word limit. Winning entries are filed in the Bancroft Library.
